Overview

Sandcastle is known as a street in Ormond Beach but is technically a subdivision that includes property from the river to the ocean on the Ormond Beach Peninsula. Sandcastle is unique in Ormond Beach in that it is the last street in the Ormond Beach city limits and the only street that runs from John Anderson Dr. (river) to Ocean Shore Blvd. (ocean) without a cross street. Every other street is intersected by Halifax, Palmetto, or Peninsula. Sandcastle is also unique because it contains medians that are maintained by the city and serve as a traffic control device. In addition, the road has a series of sand dunes that serve to break the street up in a manner that other roads don't enjoy.

History

The history of the subdivision is rather unique. The entire strip of land from the ocean to the river was owned by the Akers family. The family-owned the Coral Sands Inn which still stands along the ocean to the east and all of the property to the river. Along the river was Billy Akers Jr.'s private home which sat on three lots that are currently for sale. Mr. Akers sold the land that now comprises all of Sandcastle Dr. and four homes on John Anderson Dr. Two of those homes are on the Halifax River and two are across the street. The land was sold by Mr. Akers around 1970 to Security First Savings and Loan. At that time, savings and loans (S&Ls) were organizations that worked similarly to banks but focussed on home building and mortgage lending (think George Bailey of It's a Wonderful Life). Years later, the S&L crisis would doom the S&L industry to massive transformation. Luckily for us, they were able to complete a number of fantastic projects locally before running into the later issues. Security First S&L built all of the homes along Sandcastle and included a large commercial parcel at the eastern end along Oceanshore Blvd. (A1A). That building was originally a branch office for the S&L. Since then it has taken on many different owners and tenants. As of 2021 it contains an insurance company and an accounting firm.

Fun & Sun

Today, the homes on the street are very desirable. The width of the peninsula (actually a barrier island) is only about 1/2 mile where Sandcastle crosses making it an easy walk to the beach or to the Ted Porter Riverfront Park nearby at the corner of Halifax and John Anderson. The location makes it perfect for sunrises and sunsets or for a quick walk on the traffic-free beach. It's also perfect for those interested in surf fishing, surfing, or just playing at the beach.

Schools

Another unique feature about the street is the private entrance from Sandcastle to St. Brendan's Catholic Church and School. The private school accommodates kindergarten through eighth grade. Of course, there is also a bus stop on the west end of the street for easy access to Osceola Elementary, Ormond Middle School, or Seabreeze High School.

Services

The newly remodeled Publix Grocery, Pharmacy, and Liquor store are only 1/2 mile north of Sandcastle along Oceanshore. In the other direction, Granada Blvd. is only two miles to the south with access to plenty of restaurants, shopping, and more. Keep an eye on homes as they show up on Sandcastle, it's a very unique street. Feel free to check back frequently!
